Here are a few things that increase levels of particulate matter floating around an indoor space: smoking, cooking, burning candles or fires, kerosene heaters, diffusing essential oils, cleaning using common chemical products, etc.

The main contributors to increasing particulate matter outdoors are: vehicles exhausts, brakes, etc; industrial and agricultural emissions, residential heating and cooking, etc.
